10 Garner Firefighters finished a 5 month firefighter recruit academy with the Wake County Fire Training Center and Wake Tech today.  This academy is the 3rd in Wake County and has shown to be a great success. Wake County Recruit Academy 3 has 23 recruits from departments throughout this area. The academy is run by 2 training specialist, Joe Knurowski and David Zoltoski, who work for the Wake County Fire Marshal’s Office under the Training Director Ricky Dorsey. The classes are taught by Wake Tech Instructors from this area.  Each day starts at 0800 hours with physical fitness. After 45 minutes of hard core exercise they start their training. In this academy the recruits became Emergency Medical Technicians, North Carolina certified Firefighter Level II, and North Carolina Rescue Technicians. They also received training in Hazardous Materials, National Incident Command Systems, Firefighter Safety & Survival Skills, and many other functions of becoming a Firefighter. All in all, it comes to 771 hours of training in 5 months.  Blood, sweat, and tears were a part of becoming the future of the Garner Fire Service and the new members surely deserve to be called Garner Fireman.

Garner Fire/Rescue was dispatched to a grill fire at 109 Belmore Cir. Eng 3, E-1, R-1 and Car 3 responded. The fire was out upon arrival.Liam is the boy in the picture. He is 5 years old. He was outside sitting on the deck not more than 5 feet or so from the grill. His Dad lit the grill, and then went back inside while it preheated.  For unknown reasons LP was leaking from the tank or hose. The vapors ignited and went back to the bottle lighting the grill and deck on fire. Liam heard this, looked up and was smart/brave enough to run inside and alert his parents that the back deck and grill was on fire. While Mom called 911, Dad grabbed 2 fire extinguishers and the garden hose. He extinguished the grill and the deck. Was it not for Liam's quick thinking and actions the outcome of this could have been much worse.
